From the NEJM Catalyst event Care Redesign: Creating the Future of Care Delivery at Kaiser Permanente Center for Total Health, September 30, 2015
What drives innovation in health care delivery, such as ParkinsonNet? A simple theorem, according to François de Brantes, Executive Director for the Health Care Incentives Improvement Institute: “Form follows function, and function follows incentives.” It is difficult to achieve desired outcomes if health care leaders do not follow this structure, notes de Brantes. For example, to complete a marathon (function), you must first train to get in shape (form), and you need an incentive to drive your goal. Similarly, in health care, innovation begins when health care leaders ask what functions are needed to care for a population — whether that’s addressing social needs, team structures, or payment models — and how they can be assembled in a way that will maximally drive outcomes.
